ngjs conference 2026
Languages of Jews
Call for Papers
The 2026 annual conference of the Nederlands Genootschap voor Joodse Studies will take place in Leiden on 9 November and explore the overarching topic of ‘Languages of Jews’. In this context, the concept of a ‘language’ is indebted to the tradition of the Vedic grammarian Pāṇini, who understood language as a structured system through which humans can communicate with each other. In practice, this means that communicative aspects of material culture, art in all its forms, music and theory are all to be understood as ‘languages’ for the purposes of this conference.
Proposals should include a short (250 words) abstract and concise CV. We especially encourage M.A. students and PhD candidates to apply. We welcome submissions from anyone active in Jewish Studies and adjacent fields. Please send the proposals to t.j.stokl@hum.leidenuniv.nl by 15 September. Questions can also be directed to t.j.stokl@hum.leidenuniv.nl.
The Leiden Jewish Studies Network looks forward to welcoming you in Leiden this November!
